It all began with the remarkable kindness of a courageous young boy named Kyle Andrews. His compassionate spirit inspired an entire community to unite in continuing his legacy, using the magic of a charming little town called Broome to bring healing to sick children.
In early 1998, after being diagnosed with leukemia, Kyle Andrews spent much of his time undergoing treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) in Perth. Despite the grueling nature of his treatment, he always looked forward to returning home to Broome for a much-needed respite. The time spent in Broome allowed Kyle to recharge and regain his strength. He knew his friends in Ward 3B at PMH longed for an escape from the clinical environment of the oncology ward. This inspired his dream of bringing them to Cable Beach, "so they might feel better".
This dream marked the beginning of something truly special. The Broome community came together, raising the funds for the inaugural Kyle’s Camp in 1998. The success of “Kyle’s Camp ‘98” provided such a profound and enriching experience for everyone involved that it became an annual tradition.
Though Kyle sadly passed away at the young age of 11, following the first Kyle’s Camp with his friends, his spirit and legacy continue through The Kyle Andrews Foundation Inc and the community of Broome.
The Kyle Andrews Foundation Inc group has been working together since 1998 to achieve Kyle’s dream and is fully incorporated as a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission.
